Quantitative analysis of metal distribution along the Ganga (Hooghly) estuary: Towards establishing the inter-relation between surface water, groundwater and estuarine water

- Quantified heavy-metal contamination across groundwater, surface water, soil and sediment of the Hooghly estuary, and compared it against WHO drinking-water and soil standards.
- Found arsenic in surface water and groundwater, and manganese in groundwater, above WHO limits (0.01 mg/L As, 0.05 mg/L Mn).
- Assessed sediment toxicity and ecological risk with the geoaccumulation index, potential ecological risk index and toxic risk index.
- Used correlation analysis to study how surface-water and groundwater contamination influence each other.
